User Research and Website Design

As the Payment Design Lead at Atlas HXM, I played a pivotal role in shaping the user experience and interface design for several critical financial modules, including Payroll, Compensation, Cash Requirements, Invoices, and the Payroll Calculator. My responsibilities went beyond just creating visually appealing interfaces; I focused on designing intuitive and user-centric workflows that addressed the complex needs of our global user base.

I worked closely with the business team to deeply understand and interpret business requirements, ensuring that our designs were not only aligned with customer needs but also provided effective, streamlined solutions. This collaborative approach was essential in delivering interfaces that balanced user-friendly design with robust functionality.

In addition to design, I collaborated extensively with the development team, guiding them through our UX path to ensure seamless and cohesive implementation. This involved updating and refining components within the Atlas Storybook, maintaining consistency across all financial modules. My role required a strategic blend of creative design, thoughtful planning, and clear communication to deliver high-quality, user-friendly financial solutions that enhanced the overall payment experience for our clients.

The Payment module comprises five tabs: Global Payroll, Compensation, Expenses, Cash Requirement, and Invoices.

  • Global Payroll: Customers can view payroll details by country and then drill down to individual employee payroll information. In this tab, they can review and either approve or decline payroll details for each country separately.

  • Compensation: Users can add, remove, or edit compensation information for each employee individually.

  • Expenses: Employees can submit their expenses for review and approval or declination by their line manager.

  • Cash Requirement: Customers can access an overview of payrolls and associated payroll fees.

  • Invoices: Customers can view invoices for each subscription separately and initiate the payment process using their preferred payment method.

OVERVIEW

  • Creating a New Design System: Developing a new design system to meet evolving design requirements.

  • Collaborating with Front-End Developers: Aligning new design components with front-end developers and testing to ensure they meet the design team's expectations.

  • Understanding System Needs: Initially, the absence of a Product Requirements Document (PRD) made it challenging to grasp the system’s requirements coherently.

  • Maintaining Focus: Managing a heavy workload while ensuring a seamless user experience was a significant challenge.

  • Close Collaboration with Designers: Working closely with other designers to ensure we were unified in guiding users from both UX and UI perspectives.

CHALLENGES

  • Strategic Involvement:

    • Collaborated with product managers from the initial stages to discuss roadmap priorities.

    • Participated in discussions about PRD (Product Requirements Document) details to ensure alignment with the design team’s strategies and UX perspective.

  • Wireframing and Alignment:

    • Created wireframes to ensure alignment with product managers' vision and objectives.

  • UI and UX Development:

    • Developed UI components and UX scenarios, including both "happy path" and "sad path" scenarios, to understand possible user interactions.

  • High-Fidelity Design:

    • Created high-fidelity designs and presented the UX flows to product managers.

  • Prototyping:

    • Prepared prototypes for presentation to the business team, ensuring alignment with customer needs.

  • Design and User Research:

    • Conducted design and user research to verify that flows and scenarios met legal compliance requirements.

  • Specific Design Research:

    • For specific projects, such as Expenses designs, conducted comprehensive user research, including:

      • Competitor research and analysis

      • Stakeholder interviews

      • User journey mapping

  • Design System Updates: Created a modern, stylish design system that meets new product requirements and complies with accessibility standards.

  • User Flows: Developed roughly 100 user flows adhering to UX conventions.

  • Self-Service Payroll: Enabled customers to handle all payroll tasks through self-service.

  • Compensation Management: Enabled customers to edit employee compensation based on local labor laws.

  • Expenses Management: Designed flows for employees to submit expenses, allowing line managers to review claims and, upon approval, add costs to the country’s payroll.

  • Cash Requirement and Invoices: Created designs for customers to view live costs and guide them through the payment process.

  • Bulk Upload Flow: Designed a bulk upload flow that detects duplicate pay items.

  • Payroll Calculator: Developed a payroll calculator to help customers understand hiring costs in over 160 countries.
