Rambody is a mobile application designed to help fitness trainers expand their client base online while equipping them with tools to manage each client efficiently. On the other side, Rambody offers tailored gym workouts for trainees with various fitness goals, helping them save both time and money. The app allows users to customize even the smallest details, creating personalized workout plans that meet their specific needs.

OVERVIEW

One of the primary challenges we encountered was structuring the app’s information architecture and finding ways to motivate trainees to start—and consistently return to—their workout routines under a trainer’s supervision. A key stakeholder requirement was creating a professional and engaging platform that appealed to both trainers and trainees, highlighting the app’s functionality. However, through field studies and insights gathered from 60 paper questionnaires, I identified a deeper challenge beyond just developing a professional training app. The core issue lay in designing a system that keeps users engaged over the long term. In other words, how could Rambody continuously motivate clients to pursue their fitness goals without losing momentum and giving up over time?

THE PROBLEM

Rambody serves two primary user groups: fitness trainers and trainees. While the app is free for trainers, trainees pay for monthly services. The design strategy was centered on attracting both trainers and trainees, recognizing that the number of trainees is directly influenced by the presence of more trainers. Trainers aim to grow their businesses, while trainees seek personalized guidance to reach their fitness goals.

As a UX designer, I also had to account for users who are unable to follow a regular gym routine and prefer working out at home. This presents a unique challenge, as being removed from a gym environment can hinder progress. Research from the Dominican University of California indicates that 70% of people who shared their fitness goals with friends achieved them, compared to only 35% of those who did not. Therefore, the app’s value is twofold: first, it provides users with personalized workout plans to enhance both physical and mental well-being, and second, it fosters motivation through special offers and social connections, reducing the likelihood of trainees abandoning their fitness journeys.

UNDERSTANDING THE USERS

As the UX researcher on this project, my focus was on developing a content strategy that would encourage users to stay committed to their workouts and achieve long-term fitness success. To gain a deeper understanding of user behavior, I conducted a comprehensive field study followed by a 60-participant paper questionnaire to gather more targeted insights.

Using the data collected, I created a customer journey map to explore the user experience before, during, and after interacting with the app. Based on these insights, I developed the overall theme and content for Rambody and began the prototyping process. As the leader of the UX team, I believe my contributions significantly improved user satisfaction, as evidenced by post-launch metrics and customer journey tracking.

MY ROLE

Our approach began by establishing a Google business listing, creating a free profile to enhance visibility in Google Search. This step was crucial in making the application easily discoverable. Next, we turned our attention to understanding the specific needs of both fitness trainers and trainees, focusing on delivering a personalized and structured training plan tailored to the client’s gender, background, lifestyle, and fitness goals. Our goal was to develop an intuitive and effective app that caters to both target users.

We introduced features such as body analysis, progress tracking, and workout history to keep users motivated and engaged. These tools enable clients to monitor their performance over time, observe how their body and mindset evolve, and adjust their plans to achieve desired fitness outcomes.

Awareness (needs)

Customers typically become aware of a practical or emotional need—whether they are fitness trainers looking to expand their business or individuals wanting to improve their health from home. Both groups require a structured workout plan and the motivation to stay consistent.

Consideration

Once customers identify potential solutions, they evaluate available products and services. Rambody’s website, social media presence, and app reviews must present a professional and trustworthy image. At this stage, an attractive offer—such as a 20% discount for first-time customers—can be a decisive factor.

Purchase

PayPal serves as a reliable and convenient payment option, streamlining the purchasing process for customers.

Loyalty

Once customers identify potential solutions, they evaluate available products and services. Rambody’s website, social media presence, and app reviews must present a professional and trustworthy image. At this stage, an attractive offer—such as a 20% discount for first-time customers—can be a decisive factor.

Advocacy

Finally, the system encourages satisfied customers to share their experiences via social media, explaining how Rambody helped them reach their fitness goals using the hashtag #rambody. This step helps amplify word-of-mouth marketing and fosters a sense of community.

By carefully mapping out each stage of the customer journey, Rambody ensures a seamless, value-driven experience from awareness to advocacy.

After launching the application, the UX team established a baseline and developed an ongoing tracking system for small businesses to regularly monitor customer satisfaction through the following metrics:

  • Customer reviews: Gauging overall satisfaction through qualitative feedback.

  • Customer retention rate and repeat buyers: Measuring loyalty and long-term engagement.

  • Social media shares: Tracking organic promotion and user advocacy across platforms.

  • Net Promoter Score (NPS): Quantifying how likely customers are to recommend the product to others.

This approach ensures continuous improvement by identifying key areas of success and opportunities for enhancement.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION TRACKING TOOLS

LESSONS LEARNED

I learned the importance of field studies and informal interviews in developing an accurate customer journey map. These hands-on approaches help designers refine their tools, methodologies, and content, ensuring a more effective design process.

As a UX designer, I realized the significance of finding simple, intuitive solutions. Clear and easily understood designs lead to higher customer satisfaction and long-term loyalty.

Through this project, I gained key insights into the distinction between customer requests and the actual needs of users. As a UX researcher, it is essential to uncover the true problems by identifying and addressing users' real needs through various research methods.

Another critical takeaway was recognizing the importance of addressing users’ emotional needs. A digital product that meets both functional and emotional expectations fosters a deeper connection and enhances user loyalty.

Lastly, I learned that testing is always essential—whether in doubt or confident in a design decision. Testing provides the data needed to validate assumptions and ensures that the right results are backed by solid metrics.

Additionally, I discovered the value of integrating websites with other data sources to enable better customization, resulting in a more personalized and seamless user experience.
